Nepali Film Anjila Selected to Represent Nepal at the Oscars 2026
Nepal has officially chosen the critically acclaimed Movie Anjila to represent the country at the 98th Academy Awards (Oscars), scheduled to take place in 2026 in the United States. The International Feature Film Selection Committee of Nepal has recommended Anjila for the Best International Feature Film category.
Committee chairperson Bimal Paudel issued a statement on Thursday, noting that the film was selected after a thorough evaluation of its technical aspects, storytelling, emotional depth of the characters, and overall artistic craft. Alongside Anjila, the producers of Gunyo Cholo had also submitted an application, but the committee decided in favor of Anjila.
Directed by Milan Chams, Anjila is based on the real-life struggles of Anjila Tumbapo Subba, the goalkeeper of Nepal’s national women’s football team. What makes the film even more compelling is that Anjila herself portrays her own journey on screen. The cast also includes celebrated actors such as Dayahang Rai, Vijay Baral, Sirjana Subba, Maotse Gurung, and Sunil Thapa.
The film is produced by Prem Kumar Shrestha and has been widely praised for its inspiring narrative, authentic performances, and strong representation of women in sports. With this selection, Nepal hopes to shine on the global stage of cinema through a story rooted in resilience and determination.
